I had completely forgotten about that Guardian list! It's kind of the extreme opposite end of the scale, isn't it? If I recall, I was too embarassed to even tally up my score...

Thanks for playing along (and for not sending this, um, "project" to the meme cemetery ;) I couldn't agree with you more about foie gras and Pierre Herme macarons; as for Jabugo ham, I almost bought some once but couldn't bring myself to shell out the £5 or so per gossamer-thin slice they were asking... Next time I won't be so foolish.

The two lists are kind of from the sublime to the ridiculous, aren't they!! And yes - next time, just close your eyes and hand over the £5 - you won't regret it. Or better still, a little trip to Spain?! ;-)

I have to say that I still feel guilty about leaving Berthillon's caramel au beurre salle ice cream off the list (and their gingimbre or pain d'epice, siiiiiigh) - it does change the way you look at ice cream. Plus there is a little ice cream shop across the road from the cathedral in Granada that makes pistachio ice cream unlike any I have ever tasted. And the other thing I really wanted to put on was truffles - particularly a pizza I had in Barcelona with no tomato paste, only mozarella and mounds of truffles. Once you know that smell, you can never ever forget (or resist!) it.

Well you have certainly got me going with your list, anything with lamb is good for this Aussie boy and there is a Spanish experience that I do want to have....

If you've never had foie gras, you should not try it.
Since once you do, you're hooked!

(Same with those Pierre Hermé macarons...I love 'Arabesque'; apricot & pistachio macarons with a nugget of almond croquant in the center...yum!)

well, I've done the macaron thingy, but the karoo lamb thingy sound far more amazing. it you saw my own list you'd understand why your lamb's got my goat.

Jabugo is actually a small village in the Andalusian province of Huelva. It is the home of Spain's largest producer of iberian ham: Sánchez Romero Carvajal. The "Jabugo" trademark has been wisely marketed and most people (even in Spain) associate it with the source of spanish ham of the highest quality.
Indeed, a large part of hams produced in Jabugo is from pigs that have actually been fed and raised in Extremadura, the region in SW Spain where most spanish iberian ham comes from. Other regions such as Guijuelo (Salamanca) are regarded too as a source of some of the best spanish hams.
The best guarantee of the quality of a spanish iberian ham are the Denominations of Origin, that is Producer's associations that are state-regulated and establish strict quality controls on the products and production processes.

Hi, about Spanish products, you should also taste Lomito, it's similar to Lomo but with a stronger taste. It's delicious!
